Is It Okay to Wear White After Labor Day in Bergen County?

Everyone has heard the saying, "no wearing white after Labor Day," but where did this saying come from? In the 1900-20's the summer season was defined starting on Memorial Day and ending on Labor Day.  People went from the cities and towns and flocked to the beach or mountains to escape the summer heat.

Before going to the beach or mountains, people would pack up their belongings and clothing.  During the summer people would leave their darker and heavier city clothes behind in exchange for their light, white summer clothes.

Once back in the city, people again packed up their summer clothes and the much more formal city clothes became the norm again.  This was back when there was a dress code for almost every situation or occasion.  The saying "no wearing white after Labor Day" came about in order to distinguish between seasons.

Today in 2016, of course you can wear white after Labor Day! For people that live in places where the weather in September is very hot and less than fall-like wearing white or summer clothing makes perfect sense.  Currently, people tend to care more about type of fabric rather than color.  Wear white after Labor Day and it is unlikely someone will give you a second look but if you wear a woolly sweater while it is still 80 degrees you might get some stares!
