Famous Historical Presidential Visits to Bergen County

On Wednesday July 8th Jimmy Carter will be doing a book signing at the YMCA in Ridgewood, to pre order tickets for the event call Bookends 201-445-0726.  In honor of this big event coming up, here is a look at a few Bergen County presidential visits throughout history:





Richard Nixon: Then just a senator, Nixon was given the key to Borough of Fair Lawn during his 1952 vice presidential campaign. He would also eventually settle in Park Ridge before his death in 1994. 






George Washington: Before he was the first president of the United States, Washington spent a great deal of time in Fort Lee leading the Continental Army. During the Revolutionary War Washington also made a stop at The Hermitage located in Ho-Ho-Kus. The Hermitage is now a museum that features tours of the beautiful stone home that Washington visited.







John F Kennedy: Just two days before his narrow win over Nixon, Kennedy made a brief stop at Teaneck Armory where he spoke to over 14,000 fans. 

Lyndon B. Johnson: Took a motorcade to Bergen Mall in Paramus in October, 1964. He was greated by more than 30,000 people, which is documented in an excerpt from his own daily diary. 






Gerald R. Ford: Seen on the left here campaigning for former Ridgewood School teacher Marge Roukema on October 3rd, 1980. 



Bill Clinton: Clinton stopped at Candlewyk Diner in East Rutherford during his successful presidential campaign in 1992. 





George H. W Bush: He made a grand entrance in a helicopter on Vets field in Ridgewood during his own campaign for re-election in 1992.



Barack Obama: He attended a dinner in Creskill in 2010 that raised money for the Democratic National Committee. Tickets for the event for over $30,000 a person.
